Abstract:
Leaf herbivory has been assessed on the 16 central individuals (8 when it is a monoculture) plots in order to test plant diversity effects and plant identity effects on arthropod herbivory. Differences of herbivory among the different feeding guilds has been recorded.
Design:
For the plots that are not monocultures, the 16 central individuals have been measured. If some species were missing, we searched for their presence in the 100 central individuals. For monocultures, only the 8 central individuals were recorded. The individuals are assessed for herbivors according to a slightly simplified hebivory protocol from BACCARA in 2009. Whenever available, 12 leaves per sappling have been assessed for the quantity of each feeding guilds (see "variables_info" sheet). Whenever possible, 6 leaves where assessed in the upper canopy part and 6 leaves in the lowest canopy part, 3 leaves at the terminal part of the branch and 3 leaves at the basal part of the branch.
There is no total herbivory category. (Will come only in 2010 herbivory data)
We had three focal species: Schima superba (scs), Castanea henrii (cah) and Quercus serrata (qus). One goal was to have at least 5 individuals of them in each plot where they were present. If this numbre was not achieved within the 16 central individuals, we increase the reserch area up to the 196 most central individuals (14 x 14 core).
Rules to score herbivory:
There are five possible amount of herbivory damage: 0%; 1-5%; 6-25%; 26-50%; 51-75% and >75% and there is no “total damage” category. Those damage are then recorded as the mean within a cathegory (p.e. 6-25% equals 15% of leaf damage in the table).
Spatial extent:
Main experiment, SiteA
29°08'-29°11'N
117°90'-117°93'E
Temporal extent:
08-09/2009
Time needes to measure the 16 central individuals in all the plots during the census that is conducted every year in late summer/early autumn since 2009
Taxonomic extent:
all the plant species of the Main Experiment site A, fot the detailled species list see the "Categories" datasheet
Measurement cirumstances:
Very hot. Sampling had to be stopped between 10 am and 2-3 pm
Data analysis:
quantification of herbivory in function of plant diversity, plant composition and plant species identity (focal plant species). In addition we can investigate if the diversity effects affect differentially the feeding guilds
