Abstract:
Extrafloral nectar (EFN) is rich in sugars and amino acids and mediates the protection-for-food mutualism between EFN-plants and ants. We analyzed (via HPLC) 8 samples for the 2 EFN-tree species (Ailanthus altissima, Triadica cochinchinensis) planted in the BEF-China main experiment and provide data on sugar concentrations (unit: nmol/ml) in EFN. The data help to uncover differing patterns in ant-visitation rates that may feed back to tree growth. Please see Staab et al., 2016, Journal of Plant Ecology (doi:10.1093/jpe/rtw017) for more details on sampling and for analytical protocols.
