Abstract:
This is the structural data on the canopies of the tree species quartets (TSQs) that were scanned via personal laser scanning (PLS) in the field campaigns of the summer of 2023 (Site A) and 2024 (Site B). The data includes different variables describing the structure of the canopy of the TSQs as well as their local neighbourhood (TSQ + one row of surrounding trees; LN). These are no single tree parameters but rather whole canopy describing variables. Additionally detailed slope inclinations have been extracted from the local digital terrain models (DTMs). For Site B (2024 campaign) rough aspects (10 degree precision) are also available. All variables except slope and aspect have been extracted from the PLS point clouds for the TSQ and the LN extent. Slope and aspect are available to the LN extent, as differentiating between TSQ and LN would be meaningless for these variables
Design:
A TSQ ideally consists of four adjacent trees in a 2x2 pattern, with a shrub in the middle. TSQs were selected based on a set of target shrubs. Namely Ardisia crenata, Camellia chekiangoleosa, and Distylium myricoides on Site A, and Distylium buxifolium and Viburnum setigerum on Site B. TSQs were then selected to cover the shrub and tree diversity range and have as many alive tree members as possible. Also a set of no-shrub and no-tree TSQs were selected. In total 284 TSQs have been selected. 151 on Site A in 2023 and 133 on Site B in 2024.
