Z1e Project management and coordination for the European subprojects in the forest biodiversity ecosystem experiment BEF-China

The general topic of the “Central project Europe Z1e” is the project management and coordination for the European subprojects in the forest biodiversity ecosystem experiment BEF-China. In the first phase of BEF-China the Central project Z1e has realized the establishment of the Comparative Study Plots (CSPs) and of the Main Experiment on two sites. A geographical information system (GIS) of the experimental sites has been set up that includes a Digital Elevation Model, the theoretical positions of all planted trees and shrubs as well as baseline data on topography, soil and climate. The Z1e project has organized the nurseries and provided the infrastructure, transport and accommodation for all members of the Research Unit. In addition workshops have been organized in China and Germany. Finally, the Central project has already realized the first syntheses of results from single subprojects and will intensify these activities. The Central project Z1e will continue with these management tasks. A focus will be the maintenance of the experimental and observational plots and basic monitoring tasks. Besides, new tasks will include the establishment of a remote sensing system for tree growth using drone-based aerial photographs, provision of further seedlings for replanting and for additional experiments and organization of central sampling campaigns for plant and soil samples.
